The rings design, which I covered previously, was carefully put together by these guys, the Class of 2014 Ring Committee. Im pleased to say that they also have some pretty good taste: Such class! But back to the ring. More than anything, its proof that all this hard work has been paying off tremendously. But I owe my position right now to a lot of people: my past teachers, my professors, my friends from high school and from the Institute, my old coworkers and employers, and my family. All of them believed in me, and told me I can do pretty much anything I set my mind to if I showed the necessary passion, curiosity, and persistence for it. What I liked most about ring delivery is the fact that practically none of the sophomores had an excuse to study not even me. Thats because our ring delivery was on the final day before dead week, or that time of the semester where we all burrow ourselves into libraries and study room forts to prepare for finals. For many people, there werent any other due dates to worry about, so I got to see a bunch of my friends. MIT liked us, so they put a ring on it :D My friend. (I was going to make the same joke at roughly the same time she said it. Could be why were friends.) How To Write An Introduction To An Inspector Calls Essay I personally think the writer of An Inspector Calls, J.B Priestly tried to educate more than entertain. I dont think it mattered much to him whether people liked or disliked this play, but that they left the theatre thinking about it and what it meant. In this essay I will try to explain this using a variety of different methods, including singling out certain characters and showing how they have tried t get the moral across in their own way, and by going into focus on the inspector who believe educates the most and who makes the biggest impression on the audience watching the play. However to do this I should show what I believe the moral of this tale is The writer made the moral of this story known at the very beginning, however we were not to know this until the end when it became apparent what the moral was. Priestly uses very clever subtleties in his work which are hard to pick up on unless you know hat you are looking for. It is just such a subtle occurrence that makes the moral apparent. It happens during Arthur Birlings speech near the beginning of the first act, the one concerning how society today is too concerned about each other and not enough about themselves. That if they looked after their own more life would be much easier. The way some of these cranks talk and write now, youd think everybody has to look after everyone else, as if were all mixed up together like bees in a hive community and all that nonsense is how he actually puts it. It is just seconds after this that the inspector arrives, interrupting Birling in the middle of his speech, perhaps meaning that what he is saying is wrong and that he has come to put him right, which in a way he has. It may also be prudent to note that Birling also refers to the threat of war in his ongoing speech and dismisses all notions that it will ever happen, saying that nobody wants war except some half civilised folk in the Balkans. However we, as a modern day audience, know that the war did happen in such a way as to involve the whole world. That misjudgement alone seems to undermine everything Birling had said and make his speech seem even more like the ramblings of a man who thinks himself much more than much more than he actually is. It is then that the inspector arrives right in the middle of the speech, only serving to further undermine Birling, and the fact that he is an inspector even more so. These repeated interruptions of Birling must indicate that what he is saying is wrong, that he is talking as a man who follows his own rule too well, so much so that he has completely no idea what the public thinks anymore. Therefore the moral of the story is this: One cannot merely look after himself and his own, we have to look after each other, we are one society and we are all the same. We must look after each other to survive. Fredrick Douglas essays After reading the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave, I have received a better understanding of the life of a slave. Douglass has a way of explaining the trials and tribulations of a slave, which makes the reader, look at the situations in a different perspective. Douglass' narrative was originally oral and he eventually sat down and wrote it as story of events of that time during his life. I believe he wrote it not just to tell his story but for other abolitionists of the time to actually feel what the slaves went through. Douglass begins his narrative in a very original way. He does not jump into the accounts of his life. But he begins very passive and describes the overseers in a detailed manner. He compares one of his slave masters, Mr. Covey, to a horse breaker. A horse breaker trains horses to be obedient and this is exactly what Mr. Covey does, he trains slaves in a similar way. The audience Douglass is trying to appeal to are the other abolitionists who he wants to convince that these masters were wrong for their treatment of other human beings. The other abolitionists consist mainly of white, middle-class individuals, usually women. They were the most literate people of the time, therefore they could read this story and understand where Douglass was coming from. He did not go into gruesome details because the women of that time could not handle the gory descriptions of the beatings and discussing things like blood would have offended women. If Douglass' narrative contained these images it would have carried a negative connotation. Douglass' main argument in the narrative was to end the institution of slavery as a whole. His goal was to appeal to the middle-class people of that time and convince them to get on board with the abolitionist movement. Samurai Knights Warriors The samurai of feudal Japan and the medieval knights of Europe had underlying similarities and differences. The comparison between these two elite, aristocratic warriors can be shown through their honour, military technology, and challenges a typical warrior had to face on an everyday basis. Their purposes as well as the basic concept of their codes, chivalry and bushido, were almost exactly identical. Furthermore, Samurai and knights both faced trouble against new modern technologies such as the arquebus, even though the samurais deftness in archery was extremely proficient. Even though the definition of samurai and knight are essentially parallel, the two had many differences. The two warriors of Japan and Europe were alike because they existed to serve a similar purpose. Samurai or an alternate name bushi, were initially warriors hired by powerful families to fight against the Yamato court by at the Nara Periods end around 793 C.E. (Turnbull, 32) Later on, Samurai were vassals hired by a daimyo or lord who would own a substantial amount of land. In return, the samurai would receive a certain amount of koku, the unit of measure of rice, and a place to sleep in the daimyos estate. (Wilson, 170) A daimyo would expect complete loyalty from a samurai and the duty to the daimyo would come before any personal issues including religion and family. According to Inazo Nitobe, a Japanese author, bushido had seven key values: Justice, courage, benevolence, politeness, veracity, honour, and loyalty. Stephen Turnbull contradicted Nitobe by saying â€Å"such was the popularity of Nitobes work that not only was all this fully accepted, but his other misconception† (Turnbull154) Bushido was not a concept carved into stone, but instead a â€Å"general attitude† from samurai. (Turnbull 156) The things that Turnbull said have some truth because the two samurai, Torii Mototada and Miyamoto Musashi had completely different opinions towards the concept of Bushido. Mototada expresses his complete loyalty to his daimyo when he wrote his last letter to his son before the fall of the Fushimi castle in 1600 when he wrote For myself, I am resolved to make a stand inside the castle, and to die a quick death But that is not the true meaning of being a warrior to show ones weakness is not within the family traditions of my master Ieyasu. It is not the way of the warrior to be shamed and avoid death even under circumstances that are not particularly important. It goes with out saying that to sacrifice ones life for ones master is an unchanging principle. (Turnbull, 156) Mototada explicitly says that he must die for his daimyo to maintain his loyalty. Musashi on the other hand, entirely declined the idea of dying for a daimyo when he said â€Å"The true way of swordsmanship is to fight with your opponent and win your real intent should not be to die with weapons worn uselessly at your side.† (Wilson, 162) There is a name for ritual suicide committed by a samurai if they feel they have failed their daimyo in retaining their loyalty and duty. A samurai would also commit suicide if his daimyo is killed and the samurai feels he needs to attend with him into the next world. (Wilson, 274) Seppuku or Hara-kiri involved a samurai stabbing himself in the stomach usually with a dagger. Seppuku could be performed either as a prepared slow ritual inside a domicile or a quick and simple death. (Turnbull website) Either way, the process would have definitely been painful and sometimes, a samurai would request a second soldier to cut off his head to end the pain of seppuku. In addition to retaining their loyalty as a reason for committing suicide, a samurai might also kill himself if he was captured by an enemy or failed to accomplish a mission, though samurai rarely killed themselves like in such behavior. (Turnbull, website) Knights of Europe would have seen this act as greatly foreign since there were never any incidents of a knight committing suicide out of respect. (Turnbull, website) A knight indeed could have been dedicated to fight for a cause if they wanted to, as shown in the crusades, but they never to an extent of killing himself.
